TEATRO ANGEL DAL FOCO

ANGEL DAL FOCO THEATRE

The theatre was dedicated to the Pergola-born military commander Angelo Dal Foco after the unification of Italy.   The theatre was constructed inside the older Monte Frumentario buildings. Teatro Angel Dal Foco (18th century) received its name in the period of Italian unification in honour of a famous Pergolese military commander who flourished in the 15th century. It was completed by the architect Raimondo Compagnini in the years 1754-1758 by restructuring the existing Teatro della Luna, itself built in 1696 in the old Magazzini dell’Abbondanza (municipal grain stores) on the wishes of the Accademia degli Immaturi literary association.

The theatre stands out for its characteristic U-shaped plan, three balcony levels and an open gods. Unfortunately it was stripped of all furnishings and backdrops in the Second World War when the building was used as a shelter for evacuees.

Alongside the theatre is the charming 18th-century Sala dell’Abbondanza (Hall of Abundance) which houses the large (355 x 414 cm) ‘Le misure, il cielo’ installation by the Pergolese artist Walter Valentini, donated to his home town in the autumn of 2002.
